To express opposition to the death penalty, a vigil will be held on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the State House. Sponsors of the event, the S.C. Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and the Christian Action Council, will ask the governor to grant clemency to Sylvester Adams, scheduled to be executed on Aug. 18. A prayer service is also planned for Aug. 17 at 9 p.m. at College Place United Methodist Church, 4801 Colonial Dr.

Come race on Lake Murray in the One Lap of Lake Murray event on Aug. 12, a Midlands Marine Institute event. MMI is a nonprofit group serving juvenile offenders in Richland and Lexington counties. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Dreher Island State Park.

The S.C. Institute on Poverty is seeking nominations for its Pathways to the Future awards, which honor efforts by individuals or groups working to achieve greater self-sufficiency.
