After posting this, Martha Burk e-mailed to say thank you. Taking the opportunity to deal with her one on one, I responded, in part, with this:

By the way, I was at the Augusta protest years ago, one of the pathetic few who turned out. At the time, I was mad at you for calling for the protest, as I knew how hard it is to mobilize women in these parts and I worried that it would backfire. After you'd issued a call to action, I felt I had to show up anyway. It was a sad day for me. Just wanted to get that off my chest. The Augusta (non)protest aside, I appreciate the work you've done on advancing women's interests. May the wind be at your back. And good luck with the book.

She replied:

Thanks for your prompt reply. And THANKS for showing up in Augusta even though we didn't meet. We found out after the protest that the right wing had reserved 3 of our busses, and of course they never showed up, even though some had paid. We canceled them two hours before the protest because there were no riders.

The protest was in fact less than spectacular, but I will have to say history has vindicated us on the rightness of the cause. We have gone on to help women sue some of the companies involved in the club for sex discrimination. We got the women at Morgan Stanley a $46 million dollar settelement last year, and just this week we got $33 million for the women at Citigroup. It's amazing what these guys will pay to keep this club exclusive and hob-nob with their buddies sans women. Anyway, thanks for your support.

Just thought others might want to know the story behind the story. To read the Washington Post's account of the protest, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A14836-2003Apr12&notFound=true. I'd always dreamed of making the Post. This was not how I had envisioned it.
