{"id":2213,"date":"2010-12-03T12:56:27","date_gmt":"2010-12-03T17:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/?p=2213"},"modified":"2010-12-03T12:56:27","modified_gmt":"2010-12-03T17:56:27","slug":"sc-retirees-laud-defeat-of-social-security-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/2010\/12\/03\/sc-retirees-laud-defeat-of-social-security-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"SC retirees laud defeat of Social Security cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Commission Proposal Unfair to Retirees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response to the defeat of recommendations by the leaders of the National Commission on Fiscal Reform and Responsibility today, SC Alliance for Retired Americans President Julie Harbin issued the following statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Carolina retirees temporarily dodged a bullet when Commission members today rejected their co-chairs\u2019 proposal to drastically cut Social Security benefits and increase the retirement age. We should never try to balance the budget on the backs of current and future retirees, particularly when Social Security has not added one cent to the deficit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that the Commission has closed its doors, we hope that we can have a more honest debate on federal spending. While it was encouraging to hear panel members acknowledge there is no link between Social Security and the deficit, it was also galling that many of the Commission members pushing draconian cuts in Social Security are also the ones leading the fight to extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/5203549742_27c9dcefef_m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2214\" title=\"5203549742_27c9dcefef_m\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/5203549742_27c9dcefef_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial Security is one of America\u2019s greatest success stories, one that has kept generations of seniors out of poverty.
