At our retreat, we\u2019ll gather in the same hall where Joan Baez once sang to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was also in that hall that the Network was founded in 1996. Over the years, the Network has returned many times to map strategy and talk politics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/04martin06-600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3496\" alt=\"04martin06-600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/04martin06-600-300x140.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/04martin06-600-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/04martin06-600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been four years since we\u2019ve been to Penn Center, and I\u2019m looking forward to going back,\u201d said Network Co-chair Donna Dewitt. \u201cIt is a special place with such a rich history, and the setting always inspires us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weekend is a unique chance for the Network\u2019s members, friends and allies get away to the beautiful Lowcountry for a chance to recharge, reconnect, and refocus.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that sometimes the most valuable part of the retreat is time spent talking to each other one-on-one, there will be down time for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weekend will be a mix of workshops, strategy sessions, and taking care of in-house business,\u201d said Network Director Brett Bursey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll also be working on current Network projects, with a special focus on the mass action we\u2019re planning for the legislature when it reconvenes in January. We\u2019re putting a lot of thought and effort into the event, and we need all hands on deck to make it as powerful and broad-based as we believe it can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/o-BERNIE-SANDERS-POPE-facebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3500\" alt=\"Vermont Senate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/o-BERNIE-SANDERS-POPE-facebook-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/strong> (I &#8211; VT) will fire up the crowd on Saturday morning. Among the most progressive members of Congress,\u00a0 he recently introduced the \u201cDemocracy is for People\u201d\u00a0 bill for a constitutional amendment to establish that corporations are not people and money is not speech. He\u2019s promoted progressive interests on the Hill since 1991, including Social Security, universal health care and workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n<p>Network member groups will be invited to share their victories and challenges in the past year, and to solicit support for projects and campaigns they\u2019re working on now.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend package is $125, and includes conference materials, all meals, and accommodations in one of Penn\u2019s refurbished dorms. It also covers Saturday night\u2019s fish fry with all the trimmings and entertainment by nationally known singer\/organizer <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/artist\/jane-sapp\/id2541662\"><strong>Jane Sapp<\/strong><\/a> and satirist <a href=\"www.davelippman.com\"><strong>Dave Lippman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/images-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3501\" alt=\"images-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/images-1.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/images-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.scpronet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/images-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sapp recorded <em>Carry It On<\/em>, an album of movement songs, with Pete Seeger and Si Kahn. She was a civil rights movement leader, former director of <a href=\"highlandercenter.org\/?\">Highlander Center<\/a> and established the first museum at Penn Center in 1971. She now heads the cultural committee of the <a href=\"www.spfund.org\/\">Southern Partners Fund<\/a>, which helped fund our retreat.<\/p>\n<p>She will be joined on stage Saturday by songster Lippman, who afflicts the complacent, takes the air out of windbags, and updates worn-out songs with parody.
