The Modjeska Simkins School<\/a> has decided to waive tuition fees for students participating this semester from locations in Sumter, Orangeburg, and St. Helena Island, where classes will be streamed live from the school’s home base at GROW in Columbia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We want to encourage the broadest participation at our partner sites, and we think this is a sound investment,” said Brett Bursey<\/strong>, executive director of the SC Progressive Network<\/a><\/strong>, which launched the school in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The satellite locations let students meet as a group and participate in classes together, giving them the shared experience that is central to the program \u2014 and to building community that lasts beyond the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You deepen the experience by sharing the experience,” Bursey said. “The course covers challenging subjects, and it is good to have someone you can process it with after class.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students attending at these sites must fill out an application in order to have full access to study guides and notices of special programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school welcomes anyone interested in understanding and better navigating our state\u2019s social and political landscape. If you are a lover of history, an activist seeking to be more effective, a retired person wanting to get involved in your community, or a transplant who wants to know the peculiar history of South Carolina, this course is for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spring session begins with orientation on Saturday, March 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes meet Mondays 6:30\u20138:30pm through June 23. Students can participate on Zoom or in-person at these locations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Columbia<\/strong> at GROW<\/a>, 1340 Elmwood Ave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   \u2022 Sumter<\/strong> at the South Sumter Resource Center<\/a>, 337 Manning Ave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2022 Orangeburg<\/strong> at the South Carolina Civil Rights Museum<\/a>, 1865 Lake Dr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2022 St. Helena <\/strong>at the Penn Center<\/a> Museum<\/p>\n\n\n\n
