You know in your head and heart that most citizens of this state and nation are not as deluded and cold-hearted as the Right would have you believe. Recent research bears that out (see Pew report link below.) <\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the SC Democratic Party has bought into the mythology of a conservative majority. Party leadership has for years felt that they had to move to the right to capture two percent of the Independent or Republican votes. Ditto with the pundits in the mainstream media.<\/p>\n
Part of the puzzle of Republican dominance in SC is that a majority of citizens here don’t bother to vote (see www.scpronet.com<\/a>). They figure they are going to get screwed by whoever wins, so they don’t even bother.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A recently released 20-year study by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press concludes that half of the public identifies with Democratic values, while only 35 percent lean Republican. Only 49 percent believe that “the best way to insure peace is through strength.” A whopping 69 percent believes that the government has a responsibility to take care of people who can’t care for themselves.<\/p>\n A summary of the Pew report is at its Web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the July 9 issue of The Nation, Rick Perlstein cites the Pew report, among others, to ask, “Will the Progressive Majority Emerge?”<\/a><\/p>\n It is high time that progressives assert some leadership in this state and give people a reason to vote.<\/p>\n To that end, mark your calendars and plan to attend the Progressive Caucus Convention of the SC Democratic Party at 1pm Aug. 18 at the SC Democratic Party Hq., 1529 Hampton St. Columbia. Rep.
